Honduras sometimes reminded me of the Shire from Lord of the Rings – especially the countryside around Copan. The Caribbean island of Roatan gave a creol vibe to this part of the trip, and the blue-green waters surrounding the island were simply amazing.
In Nicaragua we visited smoking volcanoes and a crater lake. I lay in a hammock on Ometepe island, in the shadow of volcano Concepcion and surrounded by Lake Nicaragua – allegedly home to fresh water Bull Sharks. We walked the streets of Granada, a colourful colonial town that reminded me a bit of Antigua in Guatemala.
